Firefox 3.6 Has Finally Arrived

Firefox 3.6 has finally arrived, head on over to getfirefox.com for the latest version or from within Firefox choose “Help” and then “Check for Update”.

This update sees several improvements:

Improved performance, security and stability
Users can now change their browser’s appearance with a single click, with built in support for Personas.
Firefox 3.6 will alert users about out of date plugins to keep them safe.
Open, native video can now be displayed full screen, and supports poster frames.
Improved JavaScript performance, overall browser responsiveness and startup time.
Support for new CSS, DOM and HTML5 web technologies.

Firefox 3.5.3 and 3.0.14 have been released

Head on over to getfirefox.com for the latest version or from within Firefox choose “Help” and then “Check for Update”.

The latest update fixes the following security issues.

The great new feature of this update is the warning you will receive when your flash player is outdated.

Old versions of the Adobe flash player are a common entrance for malware into your system. This new feature is yet another reason why I will continue to recommend Firefox over Internet Explorer.

Bugs addressed by the current update include the following.

MFSA 2009-46 Chrome privilege escalation due to incorrectly cached wrapper
MFSA 2009-45 Crashes with evidence of memory corruption (rv:1.9.1.2/1.9.0.13)
MFSA 2009-44 Location bar and SSL indicator spoofing via window.open() on invalid URL
MFSA 2009-38 Data corruption with SOCKS5 reply containing DNS name longer than 15 characters

After the update you will have either Firefox 3.5.2 or 3.0.13 depending on your current version.

Firefox 3.5 is finally here in all its Free and Open Source goodness. Let the web browsing begin again.

The new support for HTML 5 and its ability to play videos without using a third party insecure browser plugin is a big plus.

Private browsing mode allows you to shop on-line for birthday or anniversary gifts without leaving any info on the system at all.

Many of the features of Firefox 3.5 are included in other browsers with different names. Why should you use Firefox instead of Chrome or Internet Explorer? The simple answer is that Firefox is Free. You may be thinking that Internet Explorer is also free…but its not Free. You can only use Internet Explorer if you pay Microsoft for your copy of Windows which then includes Internet Explorer as part of that fee. Unlike Internet Explorer, Firefox is Free and it works on all major operating systems . Its very important to keep your software updated to the most current patch levels. The best software can still expose you to threats if its not updated. Which web browser should I use?

Let me start this post by saying I do not recommend that you use Internet Explorer as your primary web browser. Most malware infected computers that I see have Internet Explorer as the default browser. The current version of Firefox which is version 3.05 as of this post is far more secure than Internet Explorer 7. The available addons for Firefox are also far better than those of Internet Explorer. The only time you should click the little blue E on your desktop is when the website you’re visiting doesn’t support Firefox. Firefox can be downloaded from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/
